Mingyang Zhang

Zhang Mingyang, known by the nickname "Mountain Tiger," is a Chinese UFC light heavyweight fighter from Taihe County in Fuyang, Anhui Province.

Zhang began training in martial arts as a child under the guidance of an uncle who had trained at the Shaolin Monastery, and by his early teens he had entered the Monastery himself for advanced instruction. He specialized in Sanda, China's national kickboxing discipline, before transitioning to professional mixed martial arts. He trains out of Qingdao, in Shandong Province.

Zhang's credentials from his Sanda career remain part of the historical record and will not go stale: he won the Henan Province Youth Sanda Championship and the National Youth Sanda Championship at age 13, and in 2018 he captured gold in the 93-kilogram division at the Junior World Cup in St. Petersburg. Those accolades reflect the striking base he brought with him into mixed martial arts.

contract through the promotion's Road to UFC tournament in Singapore, finishing his opponent inside four minutes. His forward pressure, heavy hands, and finishing instincts have made him one of the most explosive strikers to emerge from China's MMA scene; the bulk of his career wins have come by knockout or TKO, many of them ended in the opening round.

Career highlights include a first-round stoppage of Brendson Ribeiro at UFC 298, a first-round elbow knockout of Ozzy Diaz in Macau, and a first-round finish of veteran Anthony Smith in Kansas City, a performance that earned him a Performance of the Night bonus, one of three such bonuses he has collected inside the Octagon.

As one of the leading Chinese standouts in the light heavyweight division, Zhang Mingyang has helped raise the profile of Chinese mixed martial arts on the world stage, carrying the Sanda tradition into the UFC cage.
