Shamil Gaziev

Shamil Gaziev is a Russian heavyweight competing in the UFC, fighting out of Bahrain as the first professional mixed martial artist to represent the island nation inside the organization.

Born and raised in Khunzakh, in Russia's Dagestan region, Gaziev came up in the same combat sports culture that has produced a wave of elite UFC talent. He was mentored by the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the renowned Dagestani coach best known for developing former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, before relocating to Bahrain to join the KHK MMA Team in Manama. Competing for Bahrain on the amateur circuit, including at IMMAF world championship events, he built a reputation as one of the most dangerous unpolished heavyweights outside the sport's major promotions.

Turning professional in 2020, Gaziev ran off a string of finishes on the regional circuit before punching his ticket to the UFC on Dana White's Contender Series, submitting Greg Velasco in the first round to earn his contract.

Standing well over six feet with a heavyweight frame to match, Gaziev fights behind a blend of heavy hands and a wrestling-based grappling pedigree, mixing uppercuts and clinch work with ground-and-pound finishing instincts that have produced stoppages in the majority of his career wins.

He validated his contract in dramatic fashion, stopping Martin Buday by TKO in his UFC debut at UFC 296
