Conor McGregor Undergoes Fifth Career Surgery After UFC 329 Knee Injury

Conor McGregor is heading into his fifth career surgery after suffering torn ACL and meniscus damage during his 69-second loss to Max Holloway at UFC 329 on July 11, 2026 in Las Vegas. The 38-year-old Irishman made the announcement on Instagram on August 4, and UFC President Dana White says a return to competition is roughly a year away.

What Injury Did Conor McGregor Suffer at UFC 329?

McGregor’s long-awaited UFC comeback lasted barely over a minute. Just 69 seconds into the welterweight main event against Max Holloway at the T-Mobile Arena, McGregor went down clutching his left knee after throwing an opening kick. Referee Mike Beltran waved off the contest, awarding Holloway a first-round TKO via injury stoppage.

Dana White confirmed in the hours after the fight that McGregor had suffered a blown ACL. A subsequent MRI revealed both an ACL tear and meniscus damage, injuries serious enough to require surgical intervention and an extended layoff from the sport.

It was a cruel end to a comeback more than five years in the making. McGregor had not competed since breaking his leg in his trilogy with Dustin Poirier in July 2021. His record now stands at 22-7.

What Did Conor McGregor Say About His Fifth Career Surgery?

McGregor broke the news on Instagram, keeping his tone characteristic and defiant despite the circumstances.

“Well folks, here we go again! Surgery number 5 of my career coming up!” McGregor wrote. In a second post, he added: “Off to get surgery today. Wish me well. I’m going to fuel up with a Mac Energy.”

It is the fifth time in his career McGregor has gone under the knife. His injury history includes a broken hand, multiple nose procedures, and the severe compound leg fracture suffered at UFC 264 in 2021 that kept him out of competition for over three years. McGregor himself put an optimistic spin on the milestone: “All things considered that is an ok number!”

What Did Dana White Say About Conor McGregor’s Recovery Timeline?

White was measured when asked about the path back for McGregor, making clear there is a process to follow before anyone starts planning fight dates.

“He’s got to have knee surgery, he’s going to have to go through physical therapy, it’s all going to take time, and then when the doctor says you can start hardcore training again, then we start talking about Conor McGregor again,” White said.

White had previously indicated a no-contest ruling was not being considered, despite McGregor publicly lobbying for that outcome in the days after UFC 329. McGregor shared leg scan results and called on the UFC to refund all bettors. The official result stands: first-round TKO loss.

When Will Conor McGregor Return to the UFC After Surgery?

McGregor has pointed toward International Fight Week 2027 as a realistic target. “With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer,” he said.

A summer 2027 return aligns with standard ACL recovery timelines of nine to twelve months. McGregor has one fight remaining on his current UFC contract, with no extension or new deal announced. Whether that contractual fight becomes a Holloway trilogy, a new opponent, or something else entirely remains unresolved.

What Is Next for Conor McGregor After His Fifth Career Surgery?

Before UFC 329, McGregor had publicly targeted a Holloway trilogy fight for International Fight Week if the rematch went his way. With the loss, that path becomes harder to justify. Holloway would need a compelling reason to give McGregor a third fight rather than chasing a title in a division where he has proven he belongs.

White flagged that McGregor also has “personal matters” to address alongside his medical rehabilitation before a combat return becomes a real conversation. At 38 years old, each surgery adds complication, and each year away from competition narrows the window.

Whether the McGregor who steps back into the octagon in 2027 can still sell pay-per-views at the level the UFC needs is a question that will not be answered until we see it happen.
