Grant Dawson

Grant Michael Dawson, known to fans as “KGD,” is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the lightweight division of the UFC.

Born in Cambria, Wisconsin, and raised in Stromsburg, Nebraska, Dawson built his athletic foundation on the wrestling mat, starring for Cross County Community School before forgoing college to pursue mixed martial arts full time. He turned pro on the regional circuit, where he collected titles with the KCFA, Victory FC, and LFA promotions on his way to the UFC.

Dawson spent years training under James Krause at Glory MMA & Fitness, where he earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, before relocating to South Florida to join American Top Team in 2022, a move he has credited as central to his continued development as a fighter.

A wrestler at his core, Dawson’s style is built around imposing top position, relentless forward pressure, and suffocating grip control that wears opponents down over the course of a fight. That grinding, mat-based approach has made him one of the most respected control wrestlers in the UFC lightweight division, equally capable of neutralizing strikers and grapplers alike by taking the fight to the floor and keeping it there.

After debuting in the promotion with a win over Julian Erosa, Dawson strung together an extended unbeaten run through the lightweight ranks, earning back-to-back Performance of the Night bonuses for finishes of Michael Trizano and Leonardo Santos. His resume also includes notable victories over Jared Gordon, Mark Madsen, Joe Solecki, Rafa Garcia, and Diego Ferreira, each showcasing the same relentless wrestling attack.

Known simply as “KGD,” Dawson has established himself as one of the division’s most durable and technically sound grapplers — a homegrown Nebraska wrestler who turned raw mat skill into a lasting career at the highest level of the sport.
