Career Overview

Kai Asakura is a Japanese mixed martial artist competing in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions of the UFC. Born in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, he grew up training in karate and sumo before an informal street-fighting rivalry with his older brother, Mikuru Asakura, pulled both of them toward organized combat sports.

Asakura turned professional in 2012 and built his career primarily in Japan, fighting for promotions including DEEP, Road FC, and eventually RIZIN. He trains out of Japan Top Team in Tokyo, working alongside his brother and a roster of RIZIN and UFC-caliber teammates. His formal credentials include a black belt in Zendo-kai karate and a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a striking-first pedigree that shaped his approach in the cage.

Asakura built his reputation in RIZIN as one of its most feared finishers, headlined by a stunning 68-second knockout of Kyoji Horiguchi that was recognized as an Upset of the Year. He went on to become a two-time RIZIN Bantamweight Champion, first winning the vacant title with a first-round soccer-kick stoppage of Hiromasa Ougikubo, then reclaiming it years later with a TKO finish of former Bellator champion Juan Archuleta. He vacated the belt upon signing with the UFC.

Inside the cage, Asakura is known for explosive, karate-influenced striking, mixing sharp kicks and knees with heavy hands, and for a finishing instinct that has produced a high rate of first-round stoppages throughout his career. That power earned him an immediate opportunity in the UFC, where his promotional debut came in a flyweight title fight against Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 310.

A star in Japan with a massive social media following, Asakura carries the Asakura family name, alongside his brother Mikuru, as one of the sport's most recognizable exports from the RIZIN promotion to the global stage of the UFC.
