Middleweight: Ikram Aliskerov def. Brunno Ferreira, Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Aliskerov was in complete control from the jump. He stung Ferreira with his reach on the feet, mixed in jump knees that kept Ferreira guessing, and secured takedowns in all three rounds. Ferreira threatened with calf slicers from the bottom but Aliskerov stayed composed and methodical. The Russian middleweight is pushing his case for a ranked opponent next.
Middleweight: Abus Magomedov def. Michal Oleksiejczuk via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:29 of R1
Abus Magomedov opened the main card in style. Oleksiejczuk looked dangerous early and had Magomedov on the back foot, but the Russian locked up a tight guillotine and finished it clean inside the first round. Post-fight, Magomedov called out Israel Adesanya. Bold move, and he earned the right to make noise with that kind of performance.
How Did the Prelims Go? — Full Prelim Results
Abdul-Rakhman Yakhyaev def. Julius Walker — KO (punches), R1 (0:08)
Eight seconds. The first punch Yakhyaev threw connected, Walker went out, and that was it. One of the fastest finishes in UFC history. The undefeated Turkish prospect is now 10-0 and looks like a serious problem for any light heavyweight on the roster.
Nursulton Ruziboev def. Andrey Pulyaev — Submission (rear-naked choke), R1 (3:58)
Dominant from start to finish. Ruziboev took Pulyaev to the mat, controlled position, and sank the rear-naked choke deep enough to leave Pulyaev unconscious. First UFC submission win for Ruziboev and a strong statement.
Daniil Donchenko def. Theodor Berggren — TKO (head kick and punches), R2 (1:35)
Donchenko opened up with a head kick, followed with ground-and-pound, and the referee had seen enough. Clean finish from a fighter who looked sharp all night.
Kaan Ofli def. Javier Reyes — Submission (arm triangle), R1 (4:16)
Ofli worked methodically on the ground, locked in the arm triangle, and got the tap before the round ended. Efficient and controlled.
Jean Matsumoto def. Bekzat Almakhan — Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29)
The closest fight of the prelims. Almakhan had his moments and the scoring was disputed, plenty of people watching had it the other way — but Matsumoto took the nod. A fight where the result could have gone either direction.
Farman Hasanov def. Eric Nolan — Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
The Baku crowd was louder for Hasanov than anyone else on the card, he’s Azerbaijani and they made sure he felt it. He also made UFC history, breaking the record for takedowns in a welterweight bout in his promotional debut. Lopsided scores tell the whole story.
Tahir Abdullayev def. Jefferson Nascimento — TKO (strikes), R3 (4:28)
Abdullayev ground Nascimento down over three rounds before the stoppage came late in the third. Nasty finish to cap off a grinding performance.
What’s at Stake in the Main Event — Fiziev vs. Torres
Rafael Fiziev (13-5) is in a tough spot heading into tonight. He’s dropped four of his last five, and the once-terrifying “Ataman” looks like a fighter searching for answers at lightweight. The 32-year-old Kyrgyzstani-born striker still carries serious power and technical striking, but his chin and durability have come into question. He needs a finish tonight — a decision win probably does not move the needle at this stage of his career.
Manuel Torres (17-3) is the opposite story — he has been violent and relentless since arriving in the UFC. The Mexican knockout artist runs at people with no regard for self-preservation, and so far that has worked out extremely well. He’s finished every one of his UFC opponents. If he can maintain that pressure against Fiziev’s counter-striking, this fight does not go the distance. Two men who want to end things early — it is going to be explosive while it lasts.
