Mighty Mouse began his UFC career as a bantamweight in 2011. But was unsuccessful in his attempt to win the UFC 135-pound title against Dominick Cruz. The organization later introduced the flyweight division in early 2012, which was a much better fit for Johnson. He took part in a tournament to crown the first flyweight champion. DJ won against Joseph Benavidez by split decision at UFC 152 to claim the title.
From 2012 to 2017, Johnson dominated his division, defeating opponents in a commanding fashion. In 2018, news emerged that the UFC was considering closing the division because it lacked popular fighters in the smallest weight class. This was largely due to Johnson’s stronghold as the champion and the UFC’s struggle to find him a worthy opponent.
Johnson lost his title to Henry Cejudo in a controversial split decision and was subsequently traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren in 2018. Resulting in one of the worst trades in combat sports history.
Demetrious Johnson still holds many UFC flyweight records, including most wins (13), most finishes (7) and longest winning streak (13).
