The gambling gods showed us zero love last week, but each week we are given the opportunity to bounce back and redeem ourselves. UFC 278 is a stacked lineup, with a lot of money to be made in Salt Lake City Utah on Saturday.
Breaking down my three favorite bets for UFC 278. I’d bet on Sean Woodson and Miranda Maverick but their lines are a bit too extreme for my taste. If I’m betting on a (-300) favorite it better be Kamaru Usman or Paulo Costa.
Kamaru Usman (-380) vs. Leon Edwards (+310)
Little foreshadowing in the introduction, so it should be no surprise I’m picking Kamaru Usman. Leon Edwards is on a 9 fight win streak since he lost to Usman back in 2015. However, entering this title fight Edwards is coming off of a win against Nate Diaz and before that a no-contest against Belal Muhammad.
Edwards’s path to a title shot has been an interesting one, with a few question marks along the way. How come we never saw Edwards vs Jorge Masvidal? Why didn’t we see a rematch between Edwards and Muhammad?
I’m betting on Usman simply for the fact that he is a completely different fighter. Trevor Whitman turned a wrestler heavy fighter, into one of the most dynamic mixed martial artists of our generation.
Bet: Kamaru Usman (-380)
Paulo Costa (-315) vs. Luke Rockhold (+260)
I was at UFC 239 where Jan Blachowicz knocked Luke Rockhold into retirement. Figured that was it for Rockhold, did not expect him to come back and accept a fight against Paulo Costa of all people.
Besides Costa’s last three fights in the UFC, he made a name for himself and climbed the rankings by knocking everyone out. Beats me why now the 37 year old decides to get back on his horse and give Costa a shot. Seems like a very poor decision. Now you could be sitting there saying “Rockhold looks like he’s in the best shape of his life”. Which he in fact does, but I’m more concerned with the health of his chin.
Rockhold has been brutally knocked out in his last two UFC losses. Costa is due for a big knockout to get his name back in the running for title contention. Give me Paulo Costa by knockout.
Bet: Paulo Costa (-315)
Jose Aldo (+105) vs. Merab Dvalishvili (-125)
Jose Aldo vs Merab Dvalishvili will be a phenomenal fight. At heart, I’m a Merab fan but it’s not every day you get the chance to bet on Jose Aldo with plus money. If this was a 5 round fight I’d be picking Merab all day, but it’s a three round fight.
Aldo is one of the greatest of all time. He has more experience than anyone else in the Bantamweight division. Aldo’s path to victory is to sit back, compromise Merab’s lead leg and grind out a decision win. If Aldo flies me down to be in his corner no way we lose with my game plan.
Betting Aldo here, really comes down to this fight being 3 rounds and Aldo holding such an experience factor over Merab. Jose Aldo by decision.
Bet: Jose Aldo (+105)
