Azamat Murzakanov

Azamat Murzakanov, known as "The Professional," is a Russian light heavyweight competing in the UFC.

Born in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of southern Russia, Murzakanov followed an unconventional road into fighting. After serving in Russia's internal troops and later working with a SOBR special-forces police unit, he crossed paths with coach Khachim Mamkhegov, an honored Russian trainer in hand-to-hand combat who became his longtime mentor. Murzakanov trains out of Fairfield, New Jersey, with the K-Dojo Warrior Tribe team.

Before transitioning to mixed martial arts, Murzakanov built an extensive amateur pedigree in hand-to-hand combat (rukopashny boi), earning recognition as a multiple-time Russian national champion and three-time world champion, along with gold medals at the European and Asian championships. He holds the rank of Honored Master of Sport, one of the highest athletic distinctions awarded in Russia.

That background shows in his approach inside the cage: Murzakanov is known for heavy hands, sharp timing, and finishing instincts, often looking to close the distance and end fights early with power punches and knees rather than play a patient positional game.

Early in his professional career, Murzakanov won the inaugural open-weight KHK World Championship at Brave Combat Federation. Since joining the UFC roster, he has earned Performance of the Night honors, including for a highlight-reel flying-knee knockout of Tafon Nchukwi, and has recorded finishes over Devin Clark and Aleksandar Rakić, a decision win over Dustin Jacoby, and a knockout victory over Alonzo Menifield.

Murzakanov's path from Caucasus hand-to-hand combat mats and Russian special forces service to the UFC light heavyweight division has made him a distinctive figure in the sport, carrying the discipline of his combat-sport roots into a striking style built for spectacular finishes.
