UFC 313 Main Event: Pereira vs. Ankalaev
Alex Pereira (12-2) dominated last year, he went on to win the 2024 World MMA Awards’ Fighter of the Year award.
Poatan’s first title defense took place against Jamahal Hill at UFC 300. Promoted as the biggest fight card in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Pereira delivered an absolutely stunning performance. In just 3 minutes and 14 seconds, he defeated Hill with a left hook that sent him to the canvas. This fight was just the beginning of a historic year for the Brazilian champion.
On two weeks’ notice, Pereira stepped up to rematch the formidable Jiri Prochazka in the main event of UFC 303, after Conor McGregor withdrew from the event due to a toe injury.
His third and final fight of the year was against another powerful kickboxer, Khalil Rountree, at UFC 307. From the opening bell, the fight turned into a slugfest, ending in the fourth round when Rountree was unable to continue due to a brutal beating.
Achieving three victories in a year is impressive, but doing so in a championship setting is remarkable. Scoring knockouts in all three of those victories is truly astonishing.
Now, Alex Pereira faces his toughest challenge yet in Magomed Ankalaev.
Magomed Ankalaev
Magomed Ankalaev (19-1-1-1) has been on the UFC roster since 2018. He experienced a setback in his debut, losing to Paul Craig by submission at 4:59 of the third round. Since that loss, Ankalaev has remained undefeated in his last 13 fights.
In December 2022, Ankalaev earned a title shot when he faced former UFC champion Jan Blachowicz for the vacant light heavyweight championship. However, the fight ended in a split draw, and neither fighter impressed the matchmakers. As a result, the UFC decided not to grant either man a second opportunity to compete for the title.
When the UFC opted to give UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira a fight against Khalil Rountree at UFC 307 and bypass Ankalaev, he felt snubbed by the promotion.
Tonight at UFC 313, Ankalaev gets his long-awaited shot at Pereira.
