Career Overview
Alexander Volkov
Alexander "Drago" Volkov is a Russian heavyweight competing in the UFC. Born and raised in Moscow, he turned professional in 2009 and built his early reputation on the Russian circuit, making his debut with M-1 Global, where he opened his career with a first-round TKO victory.
Volkov went on to fight for Bellator, capturing the promotion's vacant heavyweight championship with a win over Richard Hale before losing the title in his first defense. He then returned to M-1 Global and won that promotion's vacant heavyweight title by submission over Denis Smoldarev, adding a successful title defense before signing with the UFC, where he has remained one of the division's mainstays ever since.
A third-degree black belt in karate with roots in Kyokushin, Volkov also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, giving him a well-rounded martial arts base to go along with his kickboxing-driven striking. Standing 6'7" with an 80-inch reach, he is among the tallest, longest heavyweights in the sport, relying on patient, technical boxing and heavy leg and body kicks to control distance and break opponents down over the course of a fight. He has sharpened that striking with training alongside kickboxing standout Semmy Schilt and out of Fight Club No. 1 in Moscow.
Inside the Octagon, Volkov has scored notable wins over respected former champions and contenders including Alistair Overeem, Fabrício Werdum, and Stefan Struve, and delivered a punishing body-kick stoppage of Walt Harris. He also became just the second fighter in UFC history to finish an opponent with an Ezekiel choke, submitting Tai Tuivasa
