Brian Ortega

Brian Martin Ortega, known to fight fans as “T-City,” is an American professional mixed martial artist who competes in the featherweight division of the UFC. He is of Mexican descent, with his parents having emigrated from Sonora, Mexico, before he was raised in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.

Ortega's path into combat sports began in his early teens, when his father enrolled him in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California. Training for years under Rener Gracie, he built the grappling foundation that would come to define his career, later adding boxing coach James Luhrsen to round out his striking before turning professional in mixed martial arts.

Ortega holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Rener Gracie, a lineage that underpins his standing as one of the featherweight division's most technically dangerous grapplers.

True to his reputation, Ortega is best known for finishing fights from positions that look lost. Rather than relying purely on top control, he has repeatedly produced submissions while absorbing heavy punishment or fighting off his back, using guillotine chokes, triangles, and arm-triangles to turn losing rounds into sudden, come-from-behind victories.

Career highlights include submission finishes of Cub Swanson and Renato Moicano, both by guillotine choke, and a stoppage win over Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 that made Ortega the first fighter to finish Edgar inside the distance, a performance that earned him a shot at the UFC featherweight title.
