Colby Ray Covington, known to fight fans as "Chaos," is an American mixed martial artist who has competed in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Born in Clovis, California, Covington built his athletic foundation on the wrestling mat before turning to professional fighting. He competed collegiately for Oregon State University, where he became a two-time Pac-10 Conference champion at 174 pounds and closed out his college career by placing fifth at the NCAA Division I championships, earning NCAA Division I All-American honors. He graduated from Oregon State with a degree in sociology before transitioning full-time to mixed martial arts.
Covington built the foundation of his professional career at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, training alongside a deep roster of contenders and champions while sharpening the wrestling-based approach that would come to define his run through the UFC welterweight ranks.
Inside the Octagon, Covington built a reputation as a relentless, high-output pressure fighter. Drawing on his collegiate wrestling pedigree, he works to control opponents against the fence and on the canvas, blending takedowns with sustained volume striking from a southpaw stance across the full five-round championship distance.
Covington's resume includes victories over Demian Maia, Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal. His signature achievement came at UFC 225, where he defeated Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision to capture the interim UFC welterweight championship. He twice challenged Kamaru Usman for undisputed welterweight gold, first in a Fight of the Night battle at UFC 245 and again in a rematch at UFC 268.
Through his championship run and a string of victories over ranked contenders, Covington established himself as one of the most durable and battle-tested competitors to pass through the UFC welterweight division, a career built on elite amateur wrestling and an unrelenting fighting style.
