Hype FC’s second major stop, following Hype FC Georgia, landed in South America on October 4, when Hype Ecuador touched down at the Coliseo General Rumiñahui in Quito. The submission-only grappling promotion, which pairs grappling superfights with bare-knuckle boxing, made its Ecuador debut with a rematch nearly six years in the making: hometown star Marlon “Chito” Vera against Brazilian legend Jose Aldo.
The co-main was just as loaded on paper. Colby Covington, a former UFC interim welterweight champion, was scheduled to grapple Mayton Perea, the UFC’s newest Ecuadorian signee and the hometown crowd’s other reason to show up, before Covington was ruled out. Juan “Albaskull” Albarello stepped in on short notice and submitted Perea with a toe hold.

Marlon Vera vs. Jose Aldo Result
The submission never came. The two went the full 10 minutes and the match ended in a draw. Most of the match was a standup stalemate, with Aldo stuffing Vera’s takedowns, including about six straight minutes against the corner. Aldo pulled guard with 3:40 left, Vera threatened an outside heel hook, and Aldo escaped. That was the only submission threat of the match. Every other result from the card is listed above.
Ecuadorian outlet El Universo reported that Vera went looking for the finish for all 10 minutes, starting with leg-lock attempts and returning to takedown attempts throughout, while Aldo defended. The two smiled and talked during the match, the Quito crowd applauded both fighters, and they embraced afterward. Vera said after the fight that what matters is not how many times you fall but how many times you get back up.

How the First Vera vs. Aldo Fight Went
Vera and Aldo had unfinished business. The two first met at UFC Vegas 17 in December 2020, and Aldo won by unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three scorecards. He leaned on leg kicks and body work, and in the third round he took Vera down and controlled his back, though he could not find a finish.
The win was Aldo’s first at bantamweight after a three-fight losing streak that included two losses to Max Holloway and one to Petr Yan. For Vera, the loss came right after his upset of Sean O’Malley at UFC 252.
How the Vera vs. Aldo Rematch Came Together
It was Aldo’s first competitive appearance since announcing his second retirement from the UFC. The Brazilian legend, a UFC Hall of Famer (inducted 2023) and former featherweight champion who finished his career 32-10, walked away after a controversial split-decision loss to Aiemann Zahabi at UFC 315, telling reporters, “I don’t think I have it in me anymore.” Ahead of the fight, Aldo told El Universo that he didn’t see it as a rematch and was enjoying a calmer stage of his career away from the UFC. Primicias reported that the 40-year-old said he accepted because he felt he owed Vera, and that he arrived in Quito early to adjust to the altitude, testing his body with treadmill runs. Quito sits about 9,350 feet above sea level.
Vera came in with his own storyline to settle. The Ecuadorian had dropped four straight, including a split-decision loss to that same Aiemann Zahabi in October 2025, before snapping the skid with a third-round TKO of Charles Jourdain at UFC 331 two weeks before stepping onto the mat in Quito. He said beforehand that he planned to pressure Aldo and hunt for a choke late in the match. Vera also pointed to the altitude as a home edge, saying that if it affected Aldo, the rest would take care of itself, while calling Aldo very tough on the ground and citing his own 10 career submission wins.
When asked about Vera’s talk of choking him, Aldo shrugged it off as part of the show and said he has trained his whole career for situations like this.

Nearly six years after their UFC meeting, they ran it back under grappling rules, where only a submission gets your hand raised. The original co-main brought a different kind of crossover intrigue between two fighters at very different points in their careers.
Covington was riding momentum from another wrestling promotion. Two weeks before the card, at RAF 13, he retained his RAF cruiserweight crossover title with a technical fall stoppage of Belal Muhammad, keeping his record in the freestyle wrestling promotion unbeaten. The former UFC interim welterweight champion and two-time All-American wrestler at Oregon State has turned RAF into a platform for his post-UFC career, and Hype Ecuador was set to be his next stop on that circuit, this time on the grappling mat instead of the wrestling one.
Perea, meanwhile, trains out of Machala under coach David Chamaidan and punched his ticket to the UFC with a 45-second knockout of Zevan Hunt on Dana White’s Contender Series, earning a four-fight contract. This bout with Covington doubled as a measuring-stick outing ahead of Perea’s official UFC debut, tentatively expected in December, and a chance for the hometown fighter to test himself against one of the sport’s most decorated crossover wrestlers on his own mat.
