Rafael Fiziev

Rafael Fiziev, known to fight fans by the nickname "Ataman," is a Kyrgyzstani-Kazakh lightweight competitor in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Born in the town of Korday, Kazakhstan, to an Azerbaijani father and a Russian mother, Fiziev moved with his family to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in early childhood. Introduced to combat sports by his father, he began training in Muay Thai as a boy and built his striking foundation on the regional and international Muay Thai circuit before transitioning to mixed martial arts.

Before establishing himself in the UFC, Fiziev compiled an extensive amateur and professional Muay Thai resume, highlighted by multiple Kyrgyzstan national championships, a silver medal at the IFMA Junior World Championships, a World Muaythai Federation Intercontinental title, and a bronze medal at the IFMA World Championships. That pedigree was forged over years training in Thailand, including stints with Phuket Top Team and Tiger Muay Thai, before he later relocated his camp to Kill Cliff FC in Florida.

Fiziev's fighting style is rooted in that Muay Thai base: fluid combination striking, heavy leg and body kicks, sharp counters, and unpredictable stance switches, wrapped in elusive head movement that has drawn comparisons to bullet-dodging in "The Matrix." He has also cross-trained in boxing, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu to round out his mixed martial arts game.
