Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev is a Russian mixed martial artist and the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion, universally recognized as one of the most technically complete fighters on the planet. Born on October 27, 1991 in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, Makhachev grew up in the same ferociously competitive combat sports environment that produced his close friend and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov, training from childhood in a culture where wrestling and grappling arts are practically a way of life.

Makhachev's base is the world-renowned American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, where he has trained alongside some of the sport's elite competitors. His game is built on Dagestani wrestling and sambo — disciplines he has refined to a level that allows him to dictate where any fight takes place with near-total authority. His top control is suffocating, his mat transitions are sharp, and his ability to finish from dominant positions has produced submission victories against elite opposition. Importantly, his striking has developed into a genuine standalone weapon, removing the option for opponents to simply avoid the takedown and engage on the feet with confidence.
