Charles Oliveira
Charles Oliveira da Silva, known as “do Bronx,” is a Brazilian lightweight who held the UFC Lightweight Championship and holds the UFC record for most submission victories. Born on October 17, 1989, and raised in Guararema, São Paulo, Oliveira grew up in poverty and was diagnosed with a heart condition as a child, eventually overcoming both to become one of Brazilian MMA’s most beloved champions.
Oliveira spent the first decade of his UFC career as a respected submission specialist who had not yet cracked the elite tier, suffering losses to top names while racking up an extraordinary number of finishes. The transformation arrived when he moved to lightweight full-time: a stunning run of eleven consecutive finishes culminated in a vacant title win over Michael Chandler at UFC 262 in May 2021. He defended the belt against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje before falling to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 in October 2022.
“do Bronx” is defined by his relentlessness and grappling creativity. He attacks submissions from every position, can seemingly initiate a choke from any angle, and has demonstrated an ability to absorb punishment and still find a way to finish. His record of submission victories in UFC competition is unmatched in the promotion’s history, and his redemptive arc from consistent underdog to world champion made him one of the most emotionally resonant stories in the sport.
